A weekly look at how charities can communicate better with donors through design.

What the font?

As a designer, when I start working with a charity that I’ve never worked with before, I ask some typical questions.  ”Do you have a styleguide that provides me all the guidelines I need in order to design a new piece for you?”   If the answer is no then I get to the basics – what are your pms colours? What fonts do you use? What is the font in your logo (if different from the fonts you use)? I was asking Nikki Byrne  at Rethink Breast Cancer the same question about their logo. And she wasn’t actually sure. So, this is a tip you can use if faced with the same problem- as a designer or as a client who wishes to know what font was used in a logo (or something similar). There is a site called “What the font?“. You can upload a few different formats of the logo – which breaks it down and identifies the characters. Once that is done – you hit search (and cross your fingers) and volia!

John… this is going to be an invaluable resource for my clients. I stumble upon this problem all the time. Thanks for the heads up about What The Font? I already anticipate it being a lifesaver (and time saver and stress saver and…)

    Thank you.
    Truly.
